Fairhair

Son of Cynan fen Aedeg - the Brave

medbThis companion hails from Battania and in his wanderer_strings.XML files he's cited as a Hamlet / son of Medb type figure in the story of Bannerlord.
son of a medb

Medb, shown on the far right, is a sovereignty goddess (a term used in Irish Celtic mythos to describe a god who personifies a territory, she personified Connacht which is one of the four provinces of Ireland). Medb is strong-willed, ambitious, cunning and promiscuous. An archetypal warrior queen.

She is married to Ailill mac Máta because he was without jealousy, meanness, and fear. Just like Cynan the Brave.

Medb and Ailill had seven sons - all re-named to Maine after a druid told her that her son named Maine would kill her rival.

Two sons in particular from the story could be what this tiny description is referencing. Fedlimid who was renamed Maine "Athramail" which mean "like his father" or Cet who was renamed to Maine Mórgor ("of great duty")

So fairhair's canonical name could be either: Fedlimid-Maine Fairhair-Athramail fen Aedeg (the Brave) or Cet-Maine Fairhair-Mórgor fen Aedeg (the Brave).

hamlet william morris huntThis seven sons story also mirrors that of the one found in Marunath, albeit, pretty different. Instead of a hero named Maine it is Ochlaigan and the seven sons are dying not being prophesized to kill one man.

Finally, there's the "hamlet type" in the first half of the Ragged's short description. Hamlet is a Shakespeare story about revenge, paranoia and regal Avunculicide (uncle killing). After Prince Hamlet's father dies, his uncle takes the throne and marries Hamlet's mother. Hamlet's father, as a ghost, tells his son that his brother; Hamlet's uncle, killed him and to avenge him. [...] Sometime later, Hamlet is fatally poisoned but he succeeds in killing his uncle and avenging his father, although this is only after almost every other character in the play dies. Like most of Shakespeare's plays, this is a tragdedy.

The last character remaining, Horatio, carry's out Hamlet's final request of telling his tragic story.

Companion Story

Met in a tavern - Fairhair tells that his father, Cynan fen Aedeg - the Brave, died when he was just a baby. Now Fairhair wishes to be worthy of being his father's son, his step-father on the other hand is not so reputable. Still, Fairhair has resolved to be as loyal to him as he would his natural parent, for the sake of his mother.

Soon after Fairhair came of age (18) his family heard rumors that their neighbors had intended to raid them for cattle. Not knowing which road the neighbors would take, Fairhair was sent with a few tenants to hold a shallow river, a ford, that was far out of the way.

At first, Fairhair was angry because he'd believed he'd been kept out of the battle - away from glory. But the neighbors did soon arrive to the surprise of Fairhair. He challenged the leaders to single combat, they agreed and sent forth a champion. And after he fell they sent two more. After Fairhair successfully defeated three of their champions they honored their word and retreated.

When Fairhair returned to his step-father's hall, his mother met him outside in tears. She believed him dead. Turns out, the step-father knew where they'd come from and sent Fairhair to die. She did not attempt to stop him. She told Fairhair to flee, elsewise, the clan might slip into the abyss of kinslaying. Now Fairhair is on the road looking for a worthy lord to join.

In summary

"I was raised in a well-known clan, but my father died and my stepfather cast me out. It is a common enough story among our people. You may find many of us wandering the roads, our swords our only inheritance."
