Cowthief

The Robbed Thief - Killer of Three

This companion hails from Battania this is his description of his story: "My story? This is my tale in a nutshell - men's greed for cattle cost me my home and my kin."

Companion Story

Cowthief's uncle had a large amount of cattle. In the Battanian upcountry this is what's most valued. But his uncle's cattle were stolen by his chief's herdsman, a man they trusted. So they took up spears and fought them, but his uncle was now poor and the chief's herdsman had many kinsmen. Considering the urgency of the situation, Cowthief's uncle ordered that even the woman of the family pick up spears to ride out to fight.

They arrived at the thief's village at dawn but there were too many and so Cowthief's family was defeated. His brothers and most of his kin were killed. Cowthief now had nowhere to go.

But on that day Cowthief killed three men and found he had a taste for combat, Cowthief states "I learned that thieves grow rich, while honest men die." He went on to live in the hills as a thief. Taking cows of families more fortunate than he. He sold the cows he stole and kept his denars close to his chest.

However, Cowthief does not intend to live as a thief forever. He claims there are thousands of paths that can lead to a life of being outlaw but they mostly only have one end - so he is looking for other kinds of work.

In Summary

"My family was in a feud. Over stolen cattle, as is often the case in the upcountry. Well, the family we fought turned out to be rather stronger than us, and most of us were killed. The rest were scattered. I lived for a while as a thief, stealing to eat, but that is a bitter path, and now I am looking for something better."
